Dr. Alex Kelly: Teacher
What I do/What I teach
1. I play the standard solo and orchestral classical cello repertoire. I have played in orchestras, string quartets, and other chamber/new music ensembles since I was ten. I can teach you how to audition and get a job in an orchestra or to have a solo career. I enjoy teaching all levels of cello playing, from beginning stages to professional. Learn how to develop your cello tone with bowing techniques, learn how to develop accurate pitch with fingerboard mapping techniques, find your musical voice by learning phrasing and musicianship techniques.
2. I can play most non-classical genres on the cello, including Jazz, Folk, World, Country and Hip-Hop among others, and can teach you how to play in these genres. This requires a knowledge of music theory and composition, as well as improvisational skills. After studying advanced composition techniques of 21st century composers, it’s not hard to predict the harmonic structure of a pop song. If you don’t have these skills, I can help you get there. Learn how to play in a band!
3. I teach electronic music at the college level, and often perform with electronics and live looping. I can teach recording techniques/GarageBand/Pro Tools/Logic etc. to help you learn how to make your own album. I can also teach live electronic applications to help you develop your amplified “sound.” I have spent a lot of time figuring out a variety of electronic setups for various occasions. Don’t reinvent the wheel, give me a call. Learn how to amplify strings for live performance. Learn how to make your own album!
4. I play the piano in classical and non-classical genres and can teach you how. Piano is a great tool for learning music and composition. I believe that everyone should start learning music on the piano at an early age. I integrate theory/ composition/and improvisation into piano lessons. Learn to play the piano!
5. I direct a chamber orchestra and have started string quartets and other chamber ensembles. I can teach basic conducting/ensemble directing/band-leading skills. Learn how to create arrangements for your band or ensemble. Learn how to be a band leader!
6. I know the notation software Finale and can teach you how to professionally layout your scores with this program. Learn notation software!
7. I spend half of my time teaching, and half performing. I love doing both. If you are having a hard time creating work for yourself by finding students and gigs, give me a call and I can help you strategize. Learn how to market yourself and make money in this crazy business!
